Pocatello, ID --- Idaho State scored seven runs in the first two innings, including a deep two-run home run by Christine Keeton, and the Bengals survived a late rally to defeat Montana State-Billings 7-5. Game two was washed away by weather in the second inning for the second straight day.
Idaho State (9-29), who allowed a run in the first, scored five times in their half, on only three hits. Christine Shollenberger was hit by a pitch to start things off, and then Amy Webb followed with a walk. After a Heather Dixon single loaded the bases, Christine Keeton flew out to the fence in center for a sacrifice fly and a 1-0 lead. Merissa Janssen then doubled home a run, and pitcher Lindsay Boughton hit her first double of the season to make it 4-0.
ISU made it 5-0 when Kylie Bronson reached on an error, scoring Boughton. In the second, ISU got two unearned runs when Keeton crushed her fourth home run of the season, making it 7-1.
The Yellowjackets (22-22) made things interesting by plating three runs in the fifth inning. After a strike out, Lorel Palmer singled, and back-to-back doubles by Jenna McCartney and Terina Stacks closed the gap to 7-3, and Jessica Frank singled in Stacks to make it 7-4.
In the sixth, MSUB made it 7-5 after Palmer walked and stole second, and then scored on another McCartney double. MSU Billings did bring the tying run up in the seventh, but Boughton coaxed a groundout to end the game.
The win was the fourth straight for Boughton, although her streak of innings without allowing an earned run ended after 23 1/3 innings. Shanna Schmitz, Boughton, and Merissa Janssen each had two hits for the Bengals, and Keeton drove in three.
The Bengals have just four games left in their season, all on the road. They travel to take on Utah State on Tuesday, and then have a double header at Utah Valley State on May 5.
NOTES: The Bengals ended their home schedule 7-1, and ISU has won five of their last six ... Heather Dixon's first inning single extended her hitting streak to six games, the longest by a Bengal this season ... Dixon also set a school record with four assists in the first inning ... the teams combined for six errors
