Valais, in his second year as president of ISU, stressed the importance of student unity during a short presentation, encouraging students to "reach out and take advantage of the wonderful opportunities", academic and socially that ISU has to offer. He encouraged students to "introduce themselves", get to know one another, and become involved in making student life at ISU and within the community a meaningful and successful experience.
Before the Presidential Address, Brown shared her thoughts on issues of importance, and emphasized that school spirit and pride could be "areas to improve on".
According to Brown, ASISU government members have worked all summer to better cultivate that spirit and increase further involvement and support at ISU, and to create ways to draw students into enthusiastic participation.
Brown further comment that ASISU would be introducing a program called The President's Involvement Challenge (PIC) as a component of the "Bengal Pride Initiative", which is designed to "promote school spirit from the inside out". According to statements by Brown and information obtained from a flyer on the ASISU page of the ISU website, PIC will give students the opportunity to win prizes, such as scholarship money and gift certificates, by attending various ISU sponsored events. The events have been divided up into nine categories, such as football, basketball, homecoming, etc. To be eligible for a prize, a student must prove attendance - whether by picture, ticket stub, or event coordinator note - at no less than three events from different categories. To be eligible for the grand prize of a $500 scholarship, students must attend no less than six events from different categories. Students can send proof of event attendance to browjenn@isu.edu or drop them off at the Student Leadership and Involvement Center located on the first floor of the Pond Student Union Building.
ASISU has also made changes to itself as well, according to Brown.
"Student government has made an effort to become an open body within the last year," said Brown, urging students to drop by her office anytime. "My door is always open."
