The smell of popcorn has a way of finding people wherever they're at. The buttery delight snares students passing by the Bengal Movie Theater on the weekends and provides them a haven from the seriousness of the school week.
Employees of the Bengal Theater aren't suffering from the usual boring grind of a nine to five job, but instead are having as much fun as their customers who show up to get lost in movies.
Working the ticket booth is Chris Taylor, a senior majoring in biology, who claims he has "one of the funnest jobs on campus." As an usher responsible for working in the ticket booth, handling popcorn and soda duties, using the cash register, and doubling on many nights as the projectionist you may think this is a student job with absolutely no free time to study but Taylor manages about two to three hours of study time on an average night. The studying this year may be limited as Taylor assures me that this is "one of the better years for movies," with blockbusters, foreign films, and independent films all finding a place at the Bengal Theater.
One of the only drawbacks Taylor finds with his job is making cotton candy. "I have made cotton candy at least ten times and you just get covered in it." There is a great chemistry between the workers at the theater and that feeling is passed on to the students, "we all have a good time. We treat them good and they treat us good," said Taylor.
In addition to the growing variety of movies, there are more events taking place at the theater than in past years. Sept. 19 is national speak like a pirate day and whether you are an observer of this holiday or not the Bengal Theater will be giving away many prizes including I-Pod Shuffles and pirate stuff, and showing the movie "Hook." The theater will also have sneak peaks of films before they are released nationwide.
Date movie night is another program that is filling the seats with couples arm in arm, but Taylor mentions that "any night is date night at the movies."
All of these plans are being implemented with the goal of increasing attendance, and if they are successful they want to get new seats for the theater.
The tickets are free and Taylor says "the concessions are way cheaper than anywhere else."
Free concessions is one of the benefits of his job that Taylor laughingly says "helps you get the ladies." With the rising costs of other movie theaters it is good to know that students can enjoy a movie, good service, and inexpensive concessions at the Bengal Theater without having to selling gallons of plasma to buy popcorn somewhere else.
