NBC NEWS 6 "Home of the Broncos"

Well if you have any school pride whatsoever you're probably a little mad already after reading the title of this piece, if not you should probably see a doctor. At first site of this on the news I was completely shocked as any dyed-in-the-wool Bengal fan should be.
NBC News 6 has been advertising the phrase "NBC News 6, Home of the Broncos" in connection with the television station's coverage of Boise state football. They advertised this with television commercials and banners on their web site.
Now, the actual coverage of the games does not bother me, but does our local television station really have to call itself the "home of the Broncos?" Give me a break. I know they won the fiesta bowl but does Pocatello actually have to jump on the bandwagon? Let's not forget who beat the bumbling broncos last time they played in the dome. But that's not the point.
Not only is this "home of the Broncos" thing complete team psychosis, but it points to a larger problem that we experience here in Pocatello. It's called ISU-lack-luster-itis. I mean really, can you imagine the local station in Tuscaloosa Alabama advertising, "Tuscaloosa News 6 Home of the Auburn Tigers?" There would be riots in the streets! The television station would be lucky not to have their building burned down the day after the commercial first ran! Pocatello simply does not have this reaction. And I can tell you for sure, no TV station in Boise is advertising "home of the Bengals."
Hats off to those businesses and people who actually do have a little Bengal pride. Thank you businesses like Robert Allen Auto Group and Big Dog Satellite that proudly display their Bengal pride for everyone to see. Thank you enthusiastic tailgaters and season ticket holders. Thank you student groups that are Bengal loyalist such as the Bengal BBQ Club and Chi Alpha.
Some times I drive down the street on game day and there is no trace we even have a university here. The fact that NBC News 6 based in Pocatello Idaho can get off calling itself the "home of the Broncos," should be a major red flag for public relations at this university. Go to Boise. Go to Moscow. They've got school pride all over the place! Does this lack of school spirit have anything to do with our recruiting and retention problems? You bet. There is such an atypical attitude here in Pocatello. There are students at this university who spend hundreds of dollars out of pocket for tailgates and away games and then on the flip side there are those who just could not care less.
All in all I hope we can improve relations and visibility with public Pocatello as a whole. Not only does this responsibility lie in the hands of the administration of the University, but also we can all do our part.
What does it cost to show school spirit? Not much. A football or soccer schedule posted in your business, a bumper sticker, a car flag on game days, or even a $15 T-shirt will get the job done.
To summarize, don't wear Boise State clothing, don't advertise "home of the Broncos" on your TV station, do get out and support the school in any way you can, and pray that we can beat Eastern Washington on the 22nd.
GO BENGALS!
