Ruckus, the newest free and legal "University sponsored online Music Service" offers almost three million songs for downloading. Over 100 colleges nationwide already use Ruckus and in response to students demand for the legal music downloading, it has been available to ISU students, faculty and staff since the beginning of this semester.
According to ASISU President Jennifer Brown, "After a mass e-mail was sent out...in less than two days there were 441 registered users from ISU. Randy Gaines (Chief Information Officer), approached me about bringing Ruckus to ISU…and we decided that it would be a great way for the university to promote legal and safe music downloading."
Although over 400 students have become a part of the Ruckus family, many still are not aware that it exists. Brian Swingle, a Chartwells' employee, says he "has never even heard of it". He asked his girlfriend, Ashley Elizabeth Knowles, a third year ISU student if she knew anything about and she did not.
Freshman Business major Todd Dameron is familiar with Ruckus and reported that, "I couldn't import or export I-Tunes" that he "tried for 10 or 15 minutes to download tunes to I-Tunes" before determining that, "it wasn't for me." He stated however, that the "music selection is good…(it's) a great way to download music legally," he also notes that he does not spend a lot of (what?) downloading music.
Students must download and install a Ruckus player to take advantage of everything Ruckus has to offer. They can then enjoy a wide variety of Web shows (Celebrity Rodeo-a comedy about models), new videos-such as Elevator Girl-and students' favorite music, including new music from the R&B band Over the Rhine's, "Trumpet Child" with songs such as "Trouble" and "If a song could be President" as well as Country singer Lori McKenna's Unglamorous. You can also comment on the music and videos through the review option.
The sign up page asks for your general information in addition to your school information. When signing in, you must use your ISU e-mail address and a password that you have created. It is not recommended that you use your ISU e-mail password. At the login site, a page displays new music featured weekly, recent reviews and most played music. It also features brief tutorials which guide you through the processes of creating, managing and updating playlists as well as how to review the tunes and videos you wish to comment on and share favorites with your friends.
Ruckus is free to students but also available to ISU faculty and employees for a "low monthly fee." Once a Ruckus member, accessibility is possible anywhere including on campus and at any time.
Brown said in the University Relations press release on Aug. 27, "I'm so excited to see Ruckus come to ISU…Congratulations to ISU for implementing such a great program for students, providing a safe and legal way to download and share music".
