The Student Organizations Fair took place Wed., Sept. 13, on the Quad, showcasing the various clubs at ISU. Tables lined with information about the clubs beckoned to students in the hopes of recruiting new members and making their existence known to those who may share their interests. From playing a game of chess with the Chess Club, to enjoying a snow cone from Chi Alpha, there were many opportunities to mingle with fellow students and learn about what events the clubs at ISU have planned for the coming school year.
Val Davids, Student Organizations Coordinator for ISU, mentioned that the fair is a way for "clubs to get recognition and membership."
Davids also encouraged the formation of new clubs advising students that "if they don't see something that interests them to start a club of their own."
Forming a new club at ISU requires at least 12 members, an advisor, and a club constitution. With new office locations on the ground floor of the PSUB, Davids is excited about how the consolidation of Student Involvement offices will provide "one-stop shopping for clubs."
In addition to directing students to the tables of clubs they were interested in, Davids was also handing out a survey for students to offer feedback, which helps the University to continue to make improvements for student organizations.
"This is a really good event for students to see what kind of clubs are out there, and meeting new people has made this an interesting place to be," said Bibiana Ramirez, a sophomore taking part in the HALO Club table.
Another table at the event belonged to the newly formed Wrestling Club with president and graduate student Jeff Anderson fielding questions about the club and its formation.
"We had a big group interested in wrestling," said Anderson. "Since we were formed late we started out with no funding, but the Campus Recreation Department was more than willing to help us out with that."
Also, according to Anderson, the Wrestling Club will have activities similar to any other ISU athletic team.
"We start with a preseason, which is mostly running, and during the season we compete with other school's clubs and teams," said Anderson.
Since the formation took place over the summer and the beginning of this semester, Anderson commented that he felt the event was "good for getting the word out about the clubs."
