At 2pm on Saturday the annual fundraiser for the Cooperative Wilderness Handicap Outdoor Group (CW HOG) had not yet begun, but twenty or more volunteers were continuing the preparations that others, including the ISU basketball team, had begun early that morning. Some were shucking corn; others assembled stoves, tables, and chairs; more prepared to collect donations and direct crowds for what ISU outdoor Recreation Coordinator Bob Ellis called "Pocatello's party of the year."
"If you weren't here, you missed out," Ellis explained as he took a break in the shade.
Ellis said that he and the other volunteers and Outdoor Adventure Center employees hoped for over 1,200 people to attend the event. At $15 per person, the event would do much to raise funds for the program that buys adaptive equipment for "disabled outdoor opportunities" and provides financial aid for participants in outdoor activities. Saturday's party would include local musicians U.S. Blues, Steelhead Red, and Shawn Barnaby. Admission also includes all-you-can-eat BBQ pork, corn on the cob, salad, and a vegetarian rice dish.
This is the twenty-sixth year that CW HOG has held the Pig Out. This year program directors hoped to make at least $10,000 at the event. This money will supplement a budget also supplied by student fees and various grants. Many sponsors throughout the community contributed to the event, and with the help of over 100 volunteers, the night promised to be an event to remember.
