Just a t-shirt? Hardly. The first time many participants of intramural athletics heard that the prize for winning a championship wasn't a shiny trophy, free tuition, or a year's worth of textbooks, they were quite surprised. When asked about the main reason why people compete in intramurals, Director Shelby Williams emphatically stated: "It is all about winning the coveted t-shirt". Yes, believe it or not a t-shirt is the reason that many students intensely and casually participate in a variety or sports each semester. To many participants however, it is a lot more than that.
"The intramural program offers a variety of opportunities to students and staff at ISU. Most people are interested in the program for a few reasons. First off the program gives opportunities for competition at a competitive level after high school, for anyone interested in continuing their performance as an athlete for a few hours a week. Second, intramurals provides a huge social environment for anyone wanting to meet new people and make new friends. Our co-ed side of the program has become very popular. It allows couples and friends of the opposite sex to compete alongside each other and is a great opportunity for men and women to play at the same level. Third, the program provides an outlet for the stressful life of students. The game and match schedules are flexible for work schedules and school hours so anyone interested can have a chance to participate. Fourth, the whole point of the program is so everyone who wants to can compete". To allow everyone to compete, the program is very well designed for exactly that. The sports are arranged in different leagues beginning with the most competitive down to the less competitive. Also there are individual opportunities to allow for the sports where team play is not required. Male and female athletes of all ages, abilities, and interested are very accepted.
The list of sports is as follows: flag football, softball, volleyball, indoor/outdoor soccer, racquetball, tennis, table tennis (ping-pong), basketball, dodgeball, hockey, bowling, golf, billiards, kickball, and the list does not end there because as director Shelby Williams put it "we're always looking for new activities and ideas to extend our program and make it more exciting for more people to participate". The door is open to offer any ideas to Shelby as soon as possible as she is very willing to help and easy to work with.
