The conference was in large part funded by Jack and Pam Lemley.
Carol Mahar, a member of the conference committee, said, "Jack and Pam Lemley realize how important awareness of our environmental issues is. We are grateful for their very generous gift in funding the conference."
Those in attendance included faculty and students from universities in the intermountain west and individuals from city governments and industrial companies.
The topics presented ranged from unnatural species being introduced into Idaho's ecosystem to the effectiveness and cleanliness of using nuclear power.
In response to the presentations, Mahar said, "I have been impressed with the quality of the presentations and the expertise of the presenters."
Maria Lai, one of the presenters, said, "The conference went pretty well, but it was not well publicized."
"I would like to see more in attendance," Mahar said. "There is so much to be learned here. We need to have more students, faculty and city leaders at the conference. I hope we have a lot more attending next year."
The conference opened with a welcome from ISU President Arthur C. Vailas. In addition, members of the Shoshone-Bannock tribe paid tribute to Mother Earth and the environment to commence the conference. Their tribute consisted of a prayer, a song, dancing, and drum music.
