The Important Things In Life

Issue date: 9/26/07 Section: Opinion
With all of the issues presented to us as American Citizens and more specifically students of ISU we are forced to ask "what's important in life?" All to often we are faced with a smattering of useless ideas, trivial arguments and just plain worthless gossip by society. So a very real question arises asking us to place our money, thoughts, attention, and ultimately our time in different seats when it comes to a social stage of our lives. So what is important? I am going to tell you.
The important things in life and in the media are those of real social bearing. Those issues that affect our lives in the strongest manner. They are those issues that provide basic human rights to mankind as a whole, those issues that bring freedom, liberty, and equality to all beings of the earth. Some painfully obvious examples are easy to point out.
First off, why are we spending all of this time worrying about some stupid little conflict in the Middle East, when the real question is whether or not Britney is going to apologize for her performance on the MTV Video Music Awards? Why would we spend time and energy worrying about roughly 3,800 deaths when we can find out the details on her child custody ruling? Seriously people, we want to hear the real stories. The only Iraq I want to hear about is a new shelf for my I-pod Nano (i-rac).
Who is this guy Genocide and what is Dar Fur? Does it come in a mid high boot? Instead, please interrupt regularly scheduled programming for an update on Michael Vic's "dog trafficking!"
Moving on, if I am a participant in a special interest group, why would I focus on our nations destine-to-fail social security problem or local poverty situations when we can take up the issue of a senator's misdemeanor lewd conduct charge? Or better yet, couldn't we have an ISU "what wacky thing did OJ do this week" festival? We need to look at the grand scheme of things here.
For that matter, who cares about old boring topics of abortion and destitution? Let's look at the bigger picture. We need to know if anyone has seen Lindsay Lohan riding her bike around her Provo, Utah rehabilitation clinic (don't forget to mention what color her hair is dyed this week).
All in all it's up to every one of us to support "the important things in life" and to completely ignore the rest.

While I agree that there are things more important in life than others, it's up to the individual to decide what is important to them. If Darfur is not important to them, but Paris Hilton's latest boyfriend is, so be it. (Continued…)
