The ISU Rugby club played very well this weekend improving their season record to 4 -1 on the season. They played two full 80-minute matches against Weber State and Boise State. The first game saw a hard fought match against Weber State. Then Bengals went on to win the match 20 - 14. The team played well overall. Our conditioning was much better than when we played against Air Force a week earlier. We were inside their red zone four times and came away with no points. This week, we will work more on finishing when we have opportunities. Mark Roberts, Jacob Dittmann, Paul Martin, Alphonso White, and Fred Vilas all played well.
The second game saw Boise State come out with force. At one point, the Bengals were down 14 - 0, but did however manage to score before halftime. BSU has improved tremendously over the last year. I thought BSU outplayed us for most of the game. But the Bengals did not give up. I saw a lot of character in the team.
It was BSU who had the lead most of the second half when the score remained at 19 - 14. Mark Roberts added a penalty kick for ISU and made it 19 - 17. With about six minutes left in the game BSU scored a try to make it 26 - 17. The Bengals came 'roaring' back and scored a try with about three minutes left to make it 26 - 24 in favor of BSU. With time running out, the Bengals made a massive attack putting BSU under great pressure. It was a very beautiful thing to watch and the Bengals were relentless in their desire to score. With time winding down, the Bengals scored another try to with the game 29 - 26. I thought we showed great character out there. It is a big beginning for us. Whenever a team maintains their focus and never quit, good things can happen. That is what I saw from the Bengals. To play two full matches in one day, says a lot about our team. They worked hard during the week and it showed. Everyone played with heart.
Next, the team will travel to the University of Montana. It will be another tough game. Last spring, when we played them here, we defeated them pretty soundly, and they will be excited for this opportunity to play us.
