True Bengal

Approximately 62 people stood in a cold, rainy mist and touched the pillars on Red Hill, waiting to smooch themselves into becoming a True Bengal at the stroke of midnight on Friday. And perhaps that would have happened if the stroke of midnight had resounded from the bell tower. As was, students passed the portals of True Bengalhood at 12:02 a.m. when someone looked at his phone and pronounced that midnight was behind them.
In order to become a True Bengal, an ISU student must kiss someone while touching the pillars at midnight before the Homecoming game. The tradition was inducted last year and is patterned after similar events at other universities.
For strangers who had met briefly a few minutes before or for friends who decided to boost each other into becoming True Bengals, a peck was all that was needed. For others, more dedicated to romance, five minutes was not enough to complete the rite.
"I feel more bengally," said Shalene Summmers.
"I feel more like a tiger inside," said Johnny Williams.
Even though a significant number less showed up this year than last year, True Bengal organizer Joelle Brown said she was happy with the turnout.
President Jennifer Brown of the Associated Students of ISU said, "Last year, we had massive amounts of people. You had to touch a person who was touching a person who was touching a pillar."
"I love kissing," said ASISU Vice President Bryan Wheat, "and anytime I get a chance to kiss-which is about once year-I take it."
