Florida primary move highlights broken presidential primary system

WASHINGTON - Florida's defiant decision to hold its presidential primary weeks earlier than both national parties dictate highlights one inescapable fact: There's no easy fix for this mess of a presidential nominating system. Parties set rules and dates, but self-interested states ignore them with little fear of meaningful consequence or much concern for the national interest.

College plans total campus smoking ban

Bergen Community College this week is expected to vote to ban smoking on its entire 167-acre campus in Paramus. The school would join at least 65 others nationwide in a trend that pushes smokers to the periphery of campus life. In New Jersey, community colleges in Morris, Burlington and Somerset counties also have banned smoking campuswide.

Men "walk a mile" in heels against domestic, sexual violence

ISU's Project Hope holds annual fundraiser on ISU quad

Several men traded in their shoes for a pair of high heels before making a mile (or more) long journey around the ISU quad in Pocatello on Wed., Oct. 3. In an attempt to raise awareness of domestic violence, the men were participating in "Walk a Mile in Her Shoes", an annual fundraising event put on annually by ISU's Project Hope to combat domestic violence and sexual assault.

'I Love ISU' Campaign raises record $390,907

Southeast Idaho continues to enthusiastically support "I Love ISU." The 2007 campaign resulted in a record $390,907 raised for scholarships at Idaho State University. That's the highest-pledged total in the event's 25-year history of funding scholarships for students from Bannock, Bingham, Bonneville and Power counties, according to K.

The Idaho State University Institute of Rural Health and TeleHealth Idaho presents the Youth Suicide Prevention VGR Series, a four-week series that will be video-cast throughout Idaho. Speakers will cover topics on substance abuse and mental illness, trauma, community collaboration, and evidence-based approaches to youth suicide prevention.

ISU Homecoming results announced

The 2007 ISU Homecoming was packed with events, ranging from window painting in the SUB Canoe Room, to a hot dog eating contest on the ISU quad, to the Quietdrive concert Friday night in the SUB Ballroom. The week wrapped up Sat., Oct. 6, with the Bengal football team defeating Northern Colorado 26-14.

ISU Names McKenzie as New Registrar

ISU has announced the hiring of Laura McKenzie as the university's new registrar. McKenzie comes to Idaho State from Simpson University, in Redding, Calif., where she served in many different capacities including financial aid specialist, bursar and registrar.

Poll shows Clinton with narrow lead in Iowa

CHICAGO - With the nation's first presidential balloting just three months off, a new poll shows Sen. Hillary Clinton with a narrow lead among Iowans expected to participate in their state's first-in-the-nation Democratic caucuses. Clinton wins support from 29 percent of likely caucus participants, followed by 23 percent for former North Carolina Sen.

Public Safety Log 09/28/07 - 10/05/07

On 09/28/07 at approximately 3:12 a.m. in the G08 Lot, Public Safety performed a traffic stop for failure to signal. The individuals, two ISU students, appeared intoxicated. Pocatello Police Department (PPD) responded and took custody of the individuals. Public Safety cleared.

Walgreens gives $50,000 to ISU College of Pharmacy

The Idaho State University College of Pharmacy recently received a $50,000 gift from the Walgreens Company for use at the new ISU Treasure Valley-based health-sciences complex in Meridian. The University is expanding its Treasure Valley presence to accommodate the growing need for health-professions education in the state and has purchased approximately 102,000 square feet of a building that includes the offices of the Meridian School District.
