I have an old-married-lady secret for all of you new brides: when your husband is watching television and it seems like he is not listening to you, talk to him, it is because he is not listening that you talk to him. There is something about a man's brain that means he focuses on whatever he is doing, and nothing else. It isn't that men aren't able to multi-task-I have seen them walk and chew gum at the same time-it is that they can't hear your voice when he is watching sports on telivision.
When your husband is involved in the tube, take the time to wax your moustache and touch up your roots.
If you are a new wife and you are thinking about dropping out of college to stay home and be a good wife, understand that you will regret the decision in your future. Being a wife and a mother might be the fulfillment that you crave, but you will always wonder how an education would have affected your life. If you decide to work so that you can support your husband while he finishes his education, you will feel resentful on his graduation day.
Men, allow your wives to make her own decisions. Do not begin to think that your role as husband means you should steer your wife in the proper direction. Your wife's proper direction is whichever path she chooses to take. Your job is to love her and support her, not make decisions for her. Coincidentally, that is also your wife's job concerning you.
Again, I want to congratulate all of the newlyweds and to wish you all conjugal bliss. Marriage can be the greatest joy in a person's life, it is also the hardest job any two people can undertake.
To quote Kahil Gibran, "Sing and dance together and be joyous, but let each one of you be alone." Those, my friend, are words to build a marriage on.
