The ISU soccer team faces the Southern Utah University Thunderbirds on Saturday the sixth in Cedar City Utah. Coming into the game ISU had not had win on the road. Well it all came out on Saturday as six different players scored for ISU and the Bengals rocked Southern Utah 7-1, setting a school record for most goals scored in a game against a Division I opponent. The Bengals will now enter Conference play with a record of 5-3-3.
Karissa Henage scored her second goal of the season to put the first score on the board early for ISU off of a corner kick from Annamarie Hofstetter, who leads the team in assists with 5. Jana Boehler scored just six minutes later as she scored her team leading fifth goal of the season. Chelsea Cox scored two goals in the second half, becoming the twenty-first player to score two goals in a game. In-between those two goals Michelle Okamura headed one in off of a corner kick. Michelle Okamura and Chelsea Cox both have 3 goals on the season.
SUU Freshman Kristen Fronk scored the only goal of the game for the Thunderbirds on a kick past Maren Eves in the second half. Eves recorded six saves on the day. Eves also gave way for the first time this season to Kathryn Ford, who recorded 4 saves in her 19 minutes of play.
Natalie Graham also kicked her third goal of the season, the goal that tied the previous record for most goals against a Division I opponent followed by a score from freshman Taylor Powell, who scored her first goal of the season, which tied Idaho States all-time goals record against Carroll College. The goal came on a pass from Jenny Ford.
In the Idaho State Journal coach Gibson commented on the game. "It gives us that confidence that we can win on the road. It has eluded us up until now. Really, it's just that one extra boost that we've done it." "We just got back to that freedom of attacking and being creative. We went back to that creative flare. It was fun to watch."
ISU out shot SUU 23-19, and 14-12 on net. SUU keeper, Holly Senter was replaced after allowing five goals. Her replacement, Sutton Fox, allowed two more. The Bengals now open Big Sky play as the will face Portland State next Friday at PSU at 8:00 pm Mountain Time before they will head to Sacramento State on Sunday to face there opponents in last years Big Sky title game.
