Volleyball splits at home, earns first conference victory

The Bengals were handed their ninth straight loss Friday night 3-1 (26-30, 30-25, 22-30, 20-30) at Reed gym. The Bengals are still searching for their first conference win and dropped to 0-7 in Big Sky and 3-15 overall. Montana is now 3-4 in Big Sky and 7-10 overall.
In the first game of the set, Montana just pulled ahead of ISU in the last few points and overcame the Bengals. ISU pulled ahead in the middle of the second game with a kill by HYPERLINK "http://www.fansonly.com/schools/idsu/sports/w-volley/mtt/bartschi_britta00.html" \t "_new" Britta Bartschi. They didn't look back as they defeated the Grizzlies 30-25. Montana secured the win against ISU by taking both the third and fourth games.
ISU held a total of 48 kills in 146 attacks and hit .164. Freshman Charlee Kinghorn tallied her fourth double-double of the season with 12 digs and 10 kills. Jessica Gurney led the Bengals with 11 kills. Sarah Carson also tallied double digits in kills with 10.
Britta Bartschi led the Bengals with three blocks and also racked up eight kills. Bartschi commented on the game, "We started strong and we played well as a team, we just need to learn how to finish strong." The biggest highlight for the Bengal team was Blakely Peppinger who put up a career high of 35 assists.
Montana slammed down 67 kills in 160 attacks and hit .281. The Grizzlies had two players hit double-doubles. Taryn Wright led the game with 53 assists and 10 digs, and Whitney Hobbs finished strong with 18 kills and 14 digs.
The Bengals returned to Reed Gym Saturday to claim their first conference victory of the season. They were able to outlast the Montana State Bobcats and finished strong in five games 3-2, (27-30, 30-24, 30-27, 24-30, 15-11). The Bobcats are still winless in the conference and lost their tenth straight game. They fall 1-19 overall and 0-8 in Big Sky play.
In the first game of the match, MSU barely took over the Bengals 30-27. ISU jumped to an early 6-2 lead over the Bobcats in the second game won 30-24. ISU won the third game; then MSU rallied back and fought to win the fourth game. The match was extended to the fifth game. Emily Waldron hit the ball over the net for the first point, and ISU never lost the lead, winning the fifth game and the match.
Charlee Kinghorn picked up her second double-double of the weekend with 16 kills and 16 digs. Sarah Carson played the best killing game of her career with 15, and hit .433 in the process. She also played a strong defensive game with seven blocks. A few more ISU athletes who racked up double digits included Britta Bartshi with 13 kills and Emily Waldron with 10 kills and 18 digs.
There were a few standouts on the Bobcat side including Patti Anderson and Nicole Grypiuk who each had 15 kills. Sarah Allen tallied a game high of 59 assists. ISU and MSU almost tied in kills with 72 for the Bengals and 71 for the Bobcats. The difference was that ISU's outstanding percentage at .296 from 179 attacks versus .175 from 206 attempts from MSU.
This weekend ISU will be at home again as they will play two Big Sky games against Eastern Washington on Thursday and Portland State on Saturday. Both matches will be held at Reed Gym.
