If your from Idaho, this national- and worldwide-week-long event is probably new to you. Although this event has been celebrated since 1994, it was not indoctrinated until Governor Jim Risch put it into place in 2006. Character Counts week is an annual celebration from Oct 21 to 27 to teach ethics and character education through out the nation.

Kay Augutstine, a distinguished alumni and associate director of Drake University, came to ISU Oct. 18 to give a half day seminar to ISU-Idaho Falls and a full day seminar on Oct 19 to ISU-Pocatello. She focused on the Six Pillars of Character, which are Trustworthiness, Respect, Responsibility, Fairness, Caring, and Citizenship.

"They may not remember what you said, but they'll remember how you made them feel" was a small euphanism said by Augustine.

The Pocatello conference had some 50 plus attendees. The event was free of cost and provided breakfast and lunch to it attendees. Jim Fullerton, the ISU Leadership Program Director, hosted the event.

Josephson Intstitute's Character Counts conference was a way to introduce the student body to the ISU Leadership Academy as well at the Individual Development through Educational Activities or idea. The event brought awareness to ISU's new interdisciplinary minor in leadership studies, which begins in the fall of 2008.

In 1992, the Josephson Institute held a national conference of experts in Aspen, Colorado to determine core ethical values that transcend religion, politics, and socioeconomics. The Aspen Declaration began the framework for Character Counts in 1993.

The conference highlighted the six pillars and the implementation of ethics through the use of resources, involvement on campus, as well as personal choices. Ethical dilemmas were explored as attendees discussed the Theories of Fairness. "If your grandma knitted a sweater and it was ugly, you say, 'I love it' said Augustine. Is that fair? Most attendees thought it was.

If people weren't able to make this conference, they may contact Jim Fullerton at the Student Affairs Office at 282-3154 to find out when more leadership activities are being hosted.
