Flu shots now available at ISU Student Health Center

Issue date: 10/24/07 Section: News
The vaccines work because your body doesn't recognize that the viruses are dead, so it creates an army of antibodies to fight off the viral invaders. When your body comes in contact with live viruses, it doesn't have to waste any time and can attack the virus as soon as it reaches your body, before it has time to spread and cause symptoms. Dead viruses, however, cannot infect you with the disease.

There are some allergies, however, of which people should be aware. People who have allergies to thimerasol or eggs should not get flu shots because the vaccines are incubated in eggs and thimerasol is a preservative used in vaccines.

Flu vaccinations are not 100 percent effective, Canfield advises, but even if you do get the flu after receiving a flu shot, it will be much less severe than it would have normally been.

"I'll definitely be getting a flu shot this year," ISU student Todd Robertson said. "I usually do."

Robertson believes the benefits of a getting a flu shot are high, especially for a busy student for whom it's crucial not to miss out on any school.

The Health Center is open Monday through Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Appointments for shots are not necessary. "Just pop on in," Canfield said.
