ISU tied again with Northern Colorado on Saturday. On the cold breezy day at Davis field neither team was able to score in the double overtime game that ended in a 0-0 tie. ISU's record setting eighth overtime game of the season moved their record to 5-4-6, and 0-1-3 in the conference. Northern Colorado moved to 6-7-2 on the season and 2-1-1 in the Big Sky.
Early in the game, ISU lost Kim Crosbie, who was given a yellow card after being punched by UNC's Teresa Prais. Both players missed the second half and both overtimes. Crosbie will have to sit out for the game next week against Montana.
ISU also played the game without starter Natalie Graham, who was injured with a sprained knee.
Lauren Hough said after the game, "this was the most physical game we've played in this season."
Coach Gibson also commented the physical play of Northern Colorado, stating, "We have to have mental composure and play quickly to get away from it."
ISU keeper, Maren Eves, had six saves on the day, giving her a total of four shutouts for the season. On offense ISU had an amazing 30 shots, 15 on goal.
"It was very disappointing," said Hough, "Something is just missing. We had 30 shots and didn't get a goal. We all want it for each other and it just makes it hard when it doesn't happen."
Northern Colorado's freshman goalkeeper, Heidi Owen, played out of her mind as she recorded 15 saves on the day. ISU had their chances to get some past her. "We're outplaying teams. We have great players and great athletes. There's just a mental shield in front of the goal for us." Gibson said.
Perhaps the most nerve-racking moment of the game came in the final minutes when UNC had two perfect point blank shots to win the game. Jessica Zimmerman shot one off the bottom of the crossbar, which bounced to teammate Marika Johnson who had the shot cleared off the net by Jill Christofferson.
After the game, near the locker room, there was definitely a sense of frustration with the ISU girls.
"I got a little tough with the girls today because we've got to make a difference and we have to make it now." Said Gibson. "Finding a way to win is the answer." "When we played Portland State, we were the better team but they were there to win it. You could see it on their faces. It's a matter of being willing to put everything on the line. It's critical to score, it's mental and I have to figure out how best to lead my team." "We just have to pick our heads up and stay in it for each other." said Hough.
ISU, who has had three ties in a row, will now host the University of Montana, at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 26.
