Ever wanted to suit up and live the dream as part of a collegiate team? Here is your chance, as this week the ISU head men's basketball coach Joe O'Brien has announced that Thursday, October 18th at 11:00 am, the men's basketball team will host their annual open tryout for any eligible Idaho State student.
Each year coach O'Brien makes this possible to make sure that the coaching staff hasn't overlooked anyone prior to the season beginning.
Coaches around the country also hold open tryouts for students on campus, and not just for basketball, but for a wide variety of sports. Surprisingly enough, 'walk-ons' as they are called, often contribute to the success of major colleges all over the country. Most of these athletes make the team and aren't counted as scholarship athletes, but are eligible to play like any other member of the team.
When asked about adding walk-ons to the team, Austin Kilpatrick a sophmore guard/forward said "it is just a great opportunity for us to add another player from the guys we sit in class with. There are some great players on campus that everyone can't always see."
O'brien has also slated two scrimmages for the upcoming week as well. The scrimmages will be on Saturday afternoon at 1:00 pm in Reed Gym, adding to a full day of ISU athletics. Along with the scrimmage on Saturday, the team will have a full intersquad scrimmage on Friday night at 7:05 p.m. There will also be opportunities for fans and kids to take photos with their favorite Bengals, including newcomers Lucas Steijn and Chron Tatum, and returners such as Logan Kinghorn and Matt Stucki.
Any students interested in taking part in ISU basketball's annual tryout can contact coach Geoff Alexander at the men's basketball office at 282-4492. The open tryout is an anuual event for O'Brien, who also conducted open tryouts while at Southeastern Iowa Community College.
