Freeware: Software that can be downloaded for free (typically for personal use) is known as Freeware. For our purposes we will look at software which also provides free updates. Reputable vendors of anti-virus freeware include Avast and AVG. Well-known anti-spyware programs include Spyware Terminator, Ad-Aware SE, and Spybot - Search & Destroy. In the world of software firewalls, Comodo and Zone Alarm are the most frequently downloaded.
To be safe, Freeware must be acquired from a trusted source rather than a random website or pop-up. The following sites are regarded by many experts as safe sources:
o http://www.download.com
o http://downloads.zdnet.com
o http://www.pcworld.com/downloads
o http://www.snapfiles.com/freeware/
• Free-After-Rebate: Security tools made by market leaders such as Symantec, McAfee, and Trend Micro can be acquired for free-after rebate. This typically requires submitting a rebate and waiting six to eight weeks to be reimbursed. A useful site for discovering available rebates is http://www.freeafterrebates.info. This site lists current free-after-rebate products which can be purchased from retailers such as Staples and Best Buy. There are often restrictions, so reading the rebate information carefully is imperative.
We can pay for protection, obtain it free-after-rebate from those with the greatest market share, or download Freeware from up-and-coming innovators. Whatever option we choose, we must actively defend our systems - excuses will not protect us.
