ISU runners pace well in the Big Sky finals

Cross country finals for the men and women's team were held at the University of Montana Golf Course in Missoula, Montana this weekend.

A full summer of training paid off for the men's team as they finished fourth overall in the conference. Top finishers for ISU included Saheed Kahn and Gemma Maini, who both finished eighth in their races. Finishing first, second, and third on the men and women's team were Northern Arizona University, Weber State University, and Montana State University.

Saheed Kahn finished less than a minute behind first place finisher Lopez Lamong from Northern Arizona University. Lamong finished the 8,000 meter race in 23:51.2, and Kahn finished in 24:46.7. Kahn earned his third career All-Big Sky Conference Honors with his top ten finish.

Next for the ISU team was John Ricardi who captured 15 overall with a time of 25:20.3. Mike Tucker took 29 place with a time of 26:08.7. On his tail was Tysun Rickards who finished 30th with a time of 26:10.8. Taylor Hansen finished the race in 26:22.8 and took the 39th place. Finishing 42 was Landen Teeter with a time of 26:32.2. Freshman Ryan Davis took 57 place with a time of 27:32.7.

The second place finisher for the 8,000 meter race was David McNeill from Northern Arizona with a time of 24:04.3. Third place finisher was Seth Pikington of Weber State with 24:17.8. The top team finish in the Big Sky Conference was Northern Arizona University with five athletes in the top ten spots and a score of 22. They finished with runners coming at the 1,2,4,6,and 9 spots.

Weber State University finished second with finishers coming in 3,10,11,14, and 17. Montana State took third with a score of 95.

On the women's team sophomore Gemma Maini captured 8 place in the 5,000 meter run. She also finished with All-Big Sky Conference Honors with the top ten finish.

ISU has excellent upcoming potential athletes as three of the seven runners are freshman. Leading the freshman pack was Erica Wendt who took 23rd place and ran in 20:13.6. Freshman Holly Hansen ran in 21:31.2 and Candida Butler finished right behind her with a time of 21:35.5 finishing 63 and 64 in their first Big Sky conference meet. Hayden Siepert captured a 52 place with a time of 20:13.3 and Kerynn Davis followed her to a 53 place and a time of 20:13.6. Chelsea Kropushek took a 55 place with a time of 2:40.0.

The conference team championship went to Northern Arizona University with a score of 33 points. They placed runners in the 2, 4, 7, 6, and 11 spots. Lumberjack Lesley Van Miert finished strong in second place with a time of 17:38.2.

Weber State captured the 2nd place spot thanks to a great performance of their senior Sariah Long. She finished the 5,000 meter race with a time of 17:13.9. Junior, Morgan Haws of Weber State took 3rd place with a time of 17:45.2.

The University of Montana took the third place spot with a score of 89.
