Open Mic Night brings out local artists

Although playing to a small crowd, the message the artists of the night delivered seemed pretty clear: ISU students have talent.

Approximately 30 college students attended Open Mic Night last Friday, Jan. 18, in the in the Bengal Café, located in the Pond Student Union Building at 7 p.m.to hear local singers and poets perform. The event is quickly becoming popular on the ISU campus.

Nicole Sherrad, the Student Activities Board Programmer, Event Chair of Open Mic Night and the Master of Ceremony said that performer Ashley Smith had a "voice like a bird" and she was well received by the attendees. Many people performed and the talent the ISU campus has was showcased in the dimly lit Café that is reminiscent of a Jazz Club one might find in New York City-a perfect setting for young aspiring university artists.

Clint Bickery and Blake Portman performed songs accompanied by their guitars. The two guitarists won favor with the crowd as their guitars harmonized along with the vocals for a stellar performance.

Although the initial turnout was lower than expected, students steadily streamed in throughout the evening. Only two people signed up to perform at the event: Jeff Pearson signed up to read poetry and Mike Grant signed up to play guitar. Pearson's poetry was well articulated to the delight of the audience and Grant's guitar piece was quite pleasing to the ears.

While the performers did exceptionally well, the event was off to a slow start, especially for being sponsored by the Student Activities Board. Luckily, it was not necessary to sign up to perform at Open Mic Night and people could show up with something to perform or could perform something on the whim. By the time the event was over, about 10 artists had taken the stage to perform, all of whom added to the night's overall aesthetic appeal.
The next event will be on Feb. 15 at 7 p.m. in the Bengal Café located in the PSUB. If you have a talent or would like to come hang with a pretty groovy crowd, you should make time to attend the show. If you have a poem you would like to recite, a song you would like to sing, or a song you would like play, you may email the SAB at sab@isu.edu or stop by their office located next to Mind's Eye Gallery in bottom floor of the PSUB.
