I have compiled a list of the worst and best songs of 2007 for my first and last annual Derek Music Awards. I will be honest; the year supplied me with plenty of songs to throw on the worst list. So much so that I was tempted to throw a bunch of Zeppelin songs on the best list and discount the year as a complete failure, but I managed to scrounge up what one could call decent songs. Nothing that would ever make into my iPod, but not so amazingly bad that I felt I had to bludgeon my eardrums so I would not have to hear the horrific noises again.

2007 Worst Songs
I thought I would give you the worst first so that the best may brighten your day and give you something you can look forward to illegally downloading from Limewire while your philosophy professor repetitiously and incoherently spouts off about the inverted world that is the exact opposite of this world.

5. The Shop Boyz' song "Party Like a Rockstar" nuzzles its way onto the list of worst songs of 2007 with its insistent command to "party like a rock," which is directly followed by yet another command to "party like a rockstar." Maybe I am missing the point, but a rock sits there and really does not do too much, while a rockstar is, generally, quite animated. I recognize they are using the phrases repeatedly for some thematic or rhythmical effect, but seriously, party like a rock? Good news Shop Boyz-already practicing your advice. I do that daily with Xbox controller in hand and pizza and beer at my side. Maybe we can play some Halo 3. I will see if I can find you on Xbox Live under "totally (annoying) dude."

4. Soulja Boy's song "Crank That" was so catchy in 2007 that it created a dance craze that reminded me of the Macarena-both songs having accompanying dances reminiscent of epileptic seizures. In actuality, it is not a dance at all. The strange contortions are actually a frantic search to find whatever nearby blunt object to throw at the device creating the ruckus.

3. What list of worst songs of 2007 would be complete without Britney Spears making at least one appearance? She comes in at number three with her song "Gimme More." Britney, it seems to me that I gave it to you about 10 years ago when you asked me to "hit (that) one more time" and I am just now getting rid of whatever rash you gave me. I am sorry Britney, but I am just going to have to pass on giving you anymore.
