The ISU men and women's track teams held their first home track meet this weekend in Holt Arena. Southern Utah, Weber State, Utah State, Utah Valley, Pocatello Track Club and a few unattached athletes competed in the meet. There were big performances from both the women's and the men's side of the competition.

The events started Friday afternoon with the heptathlon and the pentathlon. Senior Nathan Capps finished with a first place victory and a Big Sky qualifying mark. The qualifying mark was set at 4,500 points and the Provisional Qualifying Standard is 5,300 points. He was able to defend his title as the Outdoor Decathlon Champion with a score of 5,167 points, just missing the provisional qualifying mark by 133 points. Capp's performance also improved his status on the Top Ten Performers list by seven points and held his fifth place status.

Finishing second in the women's pentathlon was Cassie Merkley with a score of 3,617 and a Big Sky Qualifying mark. She finished behind Jackie Poulson, an Olympic hopeful, from the Pocatello Track Club. The events in the pentathlon include the 60 meter hurdles, long jump, high jump, shot put and the 800 meter race.

After Merkley competed in five vigorous events on Friday, she bounced back on Saturday with a first place finish in high jump. She leaped over 5-06.00 and made the Big Sky Qualifying mark by over two inches. She also took second in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.88.

Saheed Khan also hit the Big Sky Qualifying Standard for the 800-meter run with his time of 1:54.18 which awarded him a first place victory. Freshman Sergio Jones beat the Big Sky Qualifying Standard in the 60-meter dash by 0.07 seconds with his time of 6.98 to capture second place. Levi Keller, a senior, vaulted to a second place finish with a height of 16-06.00 to beat the Big Sky Qualifying Standard by a foot.

Junior Kasie Scott vaulted a height of 12-06.00 for second place, behind Olympic gold medalist Stacy Dragila who competed in the Snake River Open for the Pocatello Track Club. Scott improved on her Top-Ten Performers record of 12-05.50 in 2007 and is now tied for fourth place withMichelle Railback and Jana Capps who set their records in 2003 and 2004.

Sophomore Carrie Talbot threw a distance of 52-00.50 to capture second place in the weight throw. Talbot improves on her previous Top Ten Performers record by nearly a foot from 2007 to hold her seventh place standing. In addition, Talbot beat the Big Sky Qualifying Standard by half an inch. She also placed second in the women's shot put with a throw of 40-08.00.

A top ten performance was achieved by Lois Ricardi, a senior, who ran the 3,000-meter run in 10:05.38 to take third place. Ricardi now holds the fourth best Top Ten Performances record in the 3,000-meter run and hit the Big Sky qualifying mark.

The Bengals now have a weekend's rest before they travel to Bozeman, Montana to compete in the Montana State dual on February 1.
