It is never too late to start learning something new and ISU offers an abundance of PE activity courses each semester. This semester students with a yearning for learning ice-skating have received the opportunity to try out something new.

This is the fourth winter that ISU has offered Beginning Ice Skating classes. The class meets every Friday morning from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. at the Tautphaus Park Ice Rink in Idaho Falls.

The basic activity fee of $50 dollars covers time on the ice and coaching from Lori Head, who has been an ice skating instructor for 30 years. The activity fee also includes ice skate rentals, although students are welcome to bring their own ice skates. Students who participate in the class also receive a free pass to a public skating session.

The course is open to ice skaters of any level; beginning, intermediate and advanced skill levels are encouraged to attend. Hockey players as well as figure skaters are welcome. Students of a higher skating level will be challenged with new learning opportunities. Even expert ice skaters have more to learn.

For the beginners, it is important that they learn to feel comfortable in ice skates and on the ice. They will start by learning how to stop on the ice, unless of course the student wishes to continually skate in circles.

After learning to stop, beginning students will be taught the basics of ice skating, including front and back crossovers as well as basic conditioning. This class is meant to be fun for all involved, so students are welcome to bring in suggestions for skills they would like to learn.

The last day that the class will meet is March 7. All participants will be invited to join in the final ice skating show. This show is held every year and includes any interested members from all of the classes offered at the Tautphaus Park Ice Rink.

Unfortunately the deadline for adding classes has passed, but any interested students could try ice-skating during a public skating session at the Tautphaus Park Ice Rink for around $5.50 per person, including the ice skate rentals. Call the rink at 529-0941 for information about public skating times.

Even though it is indoors, the rink is still chilly so it is important to remember to dress warmly. For more information and any questions about the class or private lessons contact Lori Head at 282-2716.
