The CW Hog Sno-Ball Event

Issue date: 2/27/08 Section: Outdoor
The Cooperative Wilderness Handicapped Outdoor Group, now known as CW HOG, was established in 1981 by Tom Whittaker to provide recreational activities to people of all ability levels.
Tom Whittaker, originally from Wales, was a student at ISU. While continuing his education at ISU. Whittaker got into a car accident that led to the loss of his right foot. Neither party involved in the accident had insurance, so the community raised funds to help pay for Whittaker's hospital bills. ISU also helped him on his way back to health by providing a room for him on the upper floor of the Pond Student Union Building.
Whittaker had always been an active person who enjoyed the outdoors. After his accident, he and his friends planned a kayaking trip together. Later, Whittaker's friends decided that they did not want Whittaker to go on the kayak trip with them because they did not want to be responsible for him because of his disability. Whittaker made the decision to go kayaking on his own.
He made it back from his solo trip safely and when he returned he realized how many people with disabilities did not know that they could still be active in the outdoors regardless of their ability level. The idea of getting people with disabilities active in the outdoors was the beginning of Whittaker's founding of CW HOG. Whittaker, through the help of some volunteers, gave people the training and knowledge to get out and explore, despite their abilities or disabilities.
CW HOG still follows the standards that Whittaker set by encouraging people with disabilities to get active in the outdoors of Idaho. Without the hundreds of volunteers who take part in the activities at CW HOG each year, the programs would not be possible.
Another aspect that sustains CW HOG alive today are the fundraisers. The newest fundraiser that CW HOG holds is the Sno-Ball. This is a night of live music, festivities and a chili dinner. This is CW HOG's way of breaking up the winter by creating a night of entertainment to get away from the winter blues.
CW HOG's Third annual Sno-ball will be held Saturday, March 1 at the Booth Barn. As always, there will be a chili dinner and they will also set up a silent auction. The Sno-ball will feature live music performed by the local band Steelhead Redd. All proceeds benefit CW HOG.
Tickets can be purchased prior to the event for eight dollars per person at the CW HOG office (in the OAC on the first floor of the Pond Student Union Building), Budget Tapes & Records and Sandbaggers. Tickets can also be purchased at the door for ten dollars each.
