The event is put on every year by the ISU Marketing Association and is their main fundraiser. The event also gives club members experience in organizing events, according to Marketing Association President Lonny Walker. Students do all of the work organizing the event, with little help from the club's advisors.
The bands that enter Pokapalooza pay a $175 entry fee and have the chance to win the $500 first prize, with second place getting $200 and third place getting $100.
"This is the biggest heavy metal show in Southeast Idaho," Walker said. "It gives the bands the opportunity to get their name out and we allow them to sell merchandise at the show".
Hammer, a DJ from KBEAR 101 FM, was the master of ceremonies for this year's show which featured nine local bands, including Pocatello natives Neckbrace, who won last year's battle. About 500 people of various ages attended the event, and ISU Public Safety officers were in attendance to make sure the crowd didn't get out of hand.
The battle started out with the band Cremation 186 performing to the slowly arriving crowd and a mosh pit soon began to form. By the time the third band of the night - Dimmencha - took the stage, the mosh pit was packed.
The highlight of the night's show was when Neckbrace took the stage. The crowd in the ballroom was filling up as the band set up their equipment and there were few if any people sitting out in the sub when the band started to play. The show they put on had the crowd obeying the lead singer Nick Poppleton's every request, and the mosh pit was at its peak during their set.
The rest of the bands in this years battle entertained the crowd for the rest of the evening and even kept those that weren't fans of heavy metal music entertained by there sets.
The evening ended with the announcement of the winners of this year's battle of the bands. Neckbrace again took first place, with Dimmencha taking second, and the Salami Rockets taking third. Attempts to reach the band after the show were unsuccessful, but for more information on their band, visit their MySpace page at www.myspace.com/neckbracemusic.com.
"Overall it was a great event and we enjoyed the opportunity to put it on and gain invaluable experience," Walker said.
