During a press conference before the event, ISU President Arthur C. Valias and U. of I. President Timothy White offered their opinions on what this collaboration has meant for the people of Idaho Falls.
"It is a good thing because it offers expertise from both universities allowing locals to move along towards degree pursuits," Vailas said. "The same collaboration that will exist with the upcoming Center for Advanced Energy Studies will provide funds for graduates, and help us solve real world problems. Also, the Early College Program offered at University Place is a great outreach effort to local high school students, and this is what ISU is about."
"This collaboration allows us to complement each other's strengths," White said. "We are growing in Idaho Falls. We offer $3 million in research annually; this is money that wouldn't otherwise come into the area. If the economic multiplier affect is considered, we generate $9 million that ultimately allows the rest of the local economy to flourish. All Idaho citizens want to see the maximum return of their tax dollars, and that is what is occurring here at the University Place, there is more opportunity for the surrounding area."
The event included a mix of ISU and U of I personnel, along with several prominent community figures. Katie Anderson, ASISU Vice President for the IF Campus, served as mistress of ceremonies for the event.
Dr. Lyle Castle, head of academic programs at University Place, said that University Place had changed lives.
"What we can do for one student is remarkable," Castle said. "We can help them realize a dream. I am as excited for the next decade as I am proud about the last decade."
During the closing remarks, White said that he was amazed at how well the two institutions have worked together to create a vital element of both universities.
