The Idaho State University Men's Rugby Club fought hard for a national championship; instead they placed second in their division.
The ISU Rugby Club began their regular season with a game against Utah State University on March 1. It was a cold, wet day on their home turf. The Bengals scored a 17-5 victory over USU.
On March 8 the ISU Rugby Club faced off against Utah Valley State College in Orem, Utah. This game determined who would make it to the Utah Rugby Union Collegiate Division Two playoffs.
Even though the Bengals fought hard against UVSC, UVSC took away the playoffs with a 56-14 victory.
"UVSC was more aggressive and played a better game overall," said Head Coach Ram Eddings.
While the Bengals were disappointed with this loss, they are not discouraged by it. The Bengals can celebrate the fact that they placed second in their division. As for next year, they feel that with the great support they get from the ISU campus and hard work, they will earn their championship.
"We look forward to being strong in the fall," said Eddings.
The ISU Men's Rugby Club was chosen to receive an equipment kit from the National Guard, sponsors of the USA Rugby National Championships. Only 300 colleges in the nation were chosen and each equipment kit is worth $6,000. The kit will include safety equipment, pads and new uniforms.
"We are very happy to have been awarded this grant," said Eddings. "It will be a great help in our continued training for our players."
The next home game for the Bengals Rugby Club will be held at Bartz Field on Saturday, April 12 at 1 p.m. and they will face Boise State University. They will also be holding a Rugby Clinic from 7:30 a.m. until 6:30 p.m. on both April 11 and 12.
