The dance group 024dance, guided by Rossa Visser, held their first concert on Saturday, April 12, in the Roger's Black Box Theater at the Performing Arts Center. This marked my first experience with modern dance. My first impression was a combination of confusion and interest.

Visser opened the show with a piece called "Shake, Rattle and Roll." This piece left me with some confusion and it wasn't until the dance had ended and the lights came on that I realized Visser was conveying a message with the movements of her body and the music. Visser later compared modern dance to poetrybecause the dancers are more abstract and leave the interpretation up to the audience, which makes each person's interpretation unique and individual.

The second piece that was presented was "Temporarily Out of Order." This particular piece was chosen to represent the Northwest Region at The American College Dance Festival National Conference in New York City, an impressive honor for the Department of Theatre and Dance. "Temporarily Out of Order" uses movements to explore human relationships in times of crisis.

My personal favorite was a piece performed by Jessie Young entitled "Boom." In this piece, Young brought out about seven lemons and placed them in varying places on the stage. She then began to move herself across the stage interacting with each lemon with her movements. Young flowed gracefully across the stage, mesmerizing the audience with her interpretation of what one should do when life hands you lemons.

Attending "An Evening of Dance" was an educating and eye opening experience. The unique forms that these dancers use to express themselves are creative and thought provoking. Each piece expressed a different idea, in a manner that is applicable to real life. Visser expressed that the goal of modern dance is to leave the audience changed for better or for worse.
