Recently, I was afforded the opportunity to watch What's Bugging Seth, an independent film that will play on the ISU Quad (rain site Bengal Theater) on Thursday, Sept. 18, at 9:00 p.m. The movie will also be shown with captions for the hearing impaired.
I have to say, I really liked this movie. Seth is hearing impaired and he starts his own bug control business. The first part of the movie deals with humor and his difficulty in being understood by potential clients, as his speech is altered due to his disability. Eventually he moves past this problem and his business starts to grow, but he is challenged by another bug business in town. Compounding his business struggles is his love life. Just as he begins to date Alma, a young woman with whom he resonates with due to her own disability, an old flame returns to town and diverts his attention. At some point midway through the film I realized that his problems and struggles could be anyone's. Seth is a striving human being wanting to succeed. He is imperfect as he can still win or lose, hurt someone's feelings, alienate his friends, swap his affections and forgive and be forgiven as quickly as the next guy. Ultimately, the message of the film may be that he is living a life just as normal or dysfunctional as anybody else. The humor and acting is first rate and What's Bugging Seth has won awards at festivals in California, New York, Florida, and many places in between, so check it out.
Kung Fu Panda plays at on Friday, Sept. 19, at 7:00 p.m. and Saturday, Sept. 20, 1:00 p.m., 3:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. Jack Black voices the panda, while Dustin Hoffman is the mentor and Angelina Jolie is the voice of the tiger. This is a humorous adventure with heart that follows a bumbling panda who accidentally stumbles into the limelight and must find himself and become all that he can be in time to save the village from an escaped prisoner seeking ultimate power and knowledge. The movie has a good message that will appeal to both adults and children alike, in that we can all find ourselves and learn to be our best without thinking we need some special power to make us better.
