Maria Lemos is a senior at Idaho State University majoring in social work. The former Associated Students of Idaho State University senator for the College of Arts and Letters recently returned from studying abroad in Sweden.
Lemos was born in Mexico, and her family immigrated to the United States when she was still a baby.
She spent the fall semester studying abroad in Umea, Sweden.
"I saw it as an opportunity to broaden my perspective," said Lemos, "I was interested in learning about how other countries viewed social problems."
After she made the decision to study abroad, she sought the help of ISU's International Program. Lemos felt that they were very helpful in answering her questions, especially as her day to leave came closer.
Lemos said while she was in Sweden she learned a lot of different things.
"I became familiar with the different social issues and compared them to home," said Lemos.
Lemos said her experience was somewhat eye-opening.
"In class, we viewed things at the global perspective, which is something I'm not used to," she said.
On the atmosphere in Sweden, Lemos said that Swedes have a relaxed mentality.
"They keep to themselves and don't stress out or become bothered by the inconveniences of life," said Lemos.
Lemos said that the people of Sweden are used to seeing a lot of international students and welcomed her very warmly. She attributed this to the other 450 international students present while she was there.
"There are so many different experiences, it's hard to name just one [as a favorite]. I think it would definitely [be having seen] the northern lights," said Lemos.
